Prevent external sites from showing this site in an iframe – Normally when showing images in Google images search, your image will appear in an iframe from Google. This option removes the iframe so when click to the image, the visitor will stay on your site. It will increase their pageviews (but can also increase their frustration).

Generate Google Images Sitemap – SEO Friendly Images automatically creates the Google images compatible XML sitemap which you can submit to Google (through Webmaster tools) to automatically help add all your images to the Google Index.

Alt and Title attributes – The alt attribute is used to describe the contents of an image file and is the most important part of image SEO.

SEO Friendly Images supports 4 replacements that you can use to define the ALT attribute.

  • %title – replaces post title
  • %name – replaces image file name ( without extension )
  • %category – replaces post category
  • %tags – replaces post tags

Title attribute is what is shown to the user when they hover over the image and you can also use these four replacements.

Override option instructs SEO Friendly Images to override your old ALT and Title attributes.

Strip extension and delimiter characters from title tag – This option will remove “, ‘, _ and – characters from the final image title attribute.

Maximum processed images for ALT and Title tags – Set the maximum number of images (from top of the post) to be processed by the plugin. Select 0 for no limit.

Automatically link internal images – Internal images are images that are attached to the current post. These are most images that you upload to your post. You can select how do you want SEO Friendly Images to handle links for this images.

Available options are

  • Leave as it is
  • Post – link to the image’s post
  • Attachment page – link to the image’s attachment page
  • Image file – link to the image file. In this case you also have the Colorbox preview available.

Automatically link external images – This option relates to all images that are not attached (uploaded to the current post). This could be images that are just added using the URL to the image file (in most cases externally linked images). The available options are the same as above with the exception of the attachment page linking (since there is none).

Retain links to external sites – Leave the link intact if it already links to an external URL.

Custom rules

Custom rules allow you to set up exceptions/different rules to the global rules.

Here is an explanation how to configure a popular  setup. Images in posts on your home/archive pages should link to the post itself, but when viewed in a single post, clicking the image should open it’s preview in a nice Colorbox.

To set up this you would set the Global rules option Automatically link internal images to Image file and enable Colorbox option.

You would then add an exception Rule, selecting only Archive pages (unselecting Main and Singular pages option) and select Automatically link internal images to Post.
